I look forward to meeting many of you at the Yatra in the coming days… : Rahul Gandhi at the beginning of the Bharat Jodo Yatra

Rahul Gandhi – Former Congress President:

It is always an honour and a pleasure for me to come to Tamil Nadu. You know my relationship with the people of Tamil Nadu. It gives me tremendous joy to come to this wonderful state.

Today, coming here to the southernmost tip of our country and looking out here into the beautiful sea, it gives me great joy to be beginning this Bharat Jodo Yatra from this beautiful place.

Why is it that after so many years after independence, we’re feeling the need and not just the Congress party but millions and millions of Indians are feeling the need for a Bharat Jodo Yatra?

What is happening in the country that so many people, millions and millions of people feel that there is a need to take an action that brings India together?

We can see the Indian flag fluttering in the wind here and all of us look up to this flag and salute this flag. Some people look at the flag, see three colours, a Chakra, a piece of cloth and they salute it.

But our flag is not just three colours, a Chakra, and a piece of cloth. This is much more than that. This flag did not come easily. It was not given to us. It was not a gift. It was earned by the Indian people.

This flag represents every single person who lives in this country. This flag represents the religion, and the language of every single person that lives in this country. It represents every single state of our country.

This flag wasn’t earned by one person but by every single Indian. This flag doesn’t belong to any state but every single state. It doesn’t belong to any religion, community, or language but to every religion, community, & language.

Embedded in this flag is our identity. Not only our identity as a nation or state but our identity as every single Indian person. This flag guarantees every single Indian protection in this country and a free and fair life in this country.

It guarantees everybody the Right to practice any religion & speak any language they desire. And today, this flag is under attack.

India is not the imposition of one idea on its people. India is the history, language, & culture of every single person. India is the institutions that protect this flag, the free media & the judiciary that protects this flag.

Today, every single one of our institutions is under attack by the BJP and the RSS. They think that this flag is their personal property. That they can determine, single-handedly, the future of the people of this country & of all the states.

They think they can frighten the opposition by using the ED, CBI, and Income Tax. The problem is that they do not understand Indian people.

Doesn’t matter how many hours of interrogation they do, not a single opposition leader is going to be scared of the BJP. The BJP thinks that they can divide this country along religious lines, and languages. This country can’t be divided.

This country will always remain united. Today, India faces its worst ever economic crisis. The highest level of unemployment that we’ve ever seen and the country is heading into a disaster.

Unfortunately, our friends in the media are fully controlled. Everybody understands it but on the television, you’ll never see unemployment or price rise. You’ll only see the image of the Prime Minister.

The BJP govt has systematically attacked the farmers, labourers, and small and medium businesses of this country. A handful of large businesses control the entire country today. Every single industry is controlled by a handful of businesses.

The Prime Minister wouldn’t last one day without their support. They control the media and they ensure that the PM is on the TV screen 24 hrs a day. In exchange, the PM carries out policies that are in their interests.

Demonetisation, flawed GST, three anti-farmer laws, are all designed to help the same few business people. The idea is very similar to what the British used to do – Divide India, make Indians fight with each other and steal from Indians.

Those days, it used to be called the East India Company. It was one big company that controlled all of India. Today, there are 3-4 big companies that control all of India.

Policies like demonetisation, GST, the three farm laws are designed to take away from the future of India, to take away from the poor people of India.

Jobs are created by small and medium businesses and our farmers. Today, small and medium businesses have been crippled by the BJP. Farmers are barely surviving.

While our youngsters can’t earn, the prices keep going up. We’re heading into bad times. It is very important that we bring the people of India together, ensure that we’re united so that India is strong. This is the aim of Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra is designed to listen to the people of India. We do not want to crush the voice of India like the RSS and the BJP do. We want to listen to the wisdom of the people of India.

I’d like to thank my brother, the CM of Tamil Nadu, Stalin Ji for coming here and meeting me this evening. I look forward to meeting many of you at the Yatra in the coming days.

Please remember, this is not enough to salute the flag, it is important to defend the ideas and the values behind the flag.

On the beach at Kanyakumari… : Shashi Tharoor

Shashi Tharoor – MP, Congress leader:

On the beach at Kanyakumari: the crowds assembled at a public meeting to mark the inauguration of the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

From the tip of India, the message of unity will march northwards.

Today, holding the tricolor in hand took the first step of Bharat Jodo Yatra: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi – Former Congress President:

The tricolor is the identity of our unity and diversity, our self-respect.

Today, holding the tricolor in hand took the first step of Bharat Jodo Yatra .

We now have to walk for miles and unite our India.

There can be no better place than Kumari, where the Statue of Equality stands tall, to start Bharat Jodo Yatra: MK Stalin

MK Stalin – President, DMK:

Today, my brother Rahul Gandhi has begun a journey to retrieve India’s soul, to uphold the lofty ideals of our republic and to unite our country’s people with love.

There can be no better place than Kumari, where the Statue of Equality stands tall, to start Bharat Jodo Yatra.

At a time when communal polarisation and vicious hate campaigns are engulfing the minds of people, India’s grand old party has undertaken an arduous task to unshackle India from oppression.

I wish the Bharat Jodo Yatra to succeed in its goal of reinventing our glorious republic.
